Sports Premium

What is Sports Premium Funding?

The Sports Premium Funding is an initiative facilitated by the Government to enhance the provision of P.E. and School Sport in primary schools. The funding, a direct response to London 2012, has been available to primary schools since 2013-2014. Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils they have in years 1 to 6. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils will receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil.

Initially, the funding received by Springwood Junior Academy supported the Academy to continue to develop its provision including the PE curriculum. We continue to develop our P.E. curriculum, providing a rich, varied and balanced provision with enhanced resources, providing quality staff CPDL which ensures high quality teaching and learning for all pupils. Sports Premium is also used to provide additional exciting opportunities for all pupils to be challenged and allow them to compete both in and out of school. The percentage of pupils attending sports competitions is increasing each year. Our aim is for all pupils to access at least one sports competition each school year.

Sport and active play is planned for during break and dinner times as part of the Play Leader initiative; this is funded by Sports Premium. The Play Leader initiative supports pupils to lead structured play activities for younger pupils and to enhance dinner time and break time provision further whilst also developing their own leadership and organisational skills.

EYFS provision targets both gross and fine motor control; this is being further developed to ensure that physical development is enhanced and a love of movement gained from an early age.

Extended Learning: After-School Clubs

Springwood Junior Academy offers a wide variety of after-school clubs, which includes active, healthy and sport clubs. These include football, dance and multi-sports.

There are also a number of other clubs which complement the school curriculum. These clubs vary to meet the interests and needs of our pupils but include construction, gardening, sign-language, history.

Clubs change half-termly and pupils are encouraged to sign up each half-term.  There are clubs available for pupils in all year groups from FS2 to Year 6.  The large selection available, linked to pupil interest and need, has led to an increasing percentage of pupils accessing clubs each year.
